Towing a trailer for the first time

Towing a trailer for the first time should be tackled with care, planning and an emphasis on safety.

Firstly you must make sure you have hitched up correctly. Double check the towing attachment and ensure safe locking in place. You need the trailer still there when you reach your destination. Make sure the licence plate is in the right place and that the lights are all connected up. Any load and contents must be secure.

You will no longer be driving your normal car, which you have grown comfortable with over the years. What does it feel like when you apply the brakes? Can you back up and still keep control of the car and the trailer?

Motor Home Safety On The Road

You have your new motor home and are ready to roll. However, have you considered how much more difficult this beauty is going to be to drive? In particular, how do you cope with a blind-spot which is much larger than your sedan car causes?

All vehicles have blind spots. These are areas that the mirrors just do not cover between them. These are usually to the rear quarter. In a car these can hide another car. In a motor home, you might find several cars or a truck or two hidden away from view. Your high position and long vehicle exacerbate this problem.

One answer is simply to add an extension. The further from the side of your vehicle the mirror extends, the more you will see. However, because the mirror will all be at the same angle, you will still find yourself with a blind spot as well as a safety hazard as you battle to drive a wide load.

Some people prefer a different sort of additional mirror. These are usually frog-eyed or square-eyed mirrors. These fit on the top of the existing wing mirror and are shaped differently so that the mirror collects light from a different angle to the main mirror. This does mean that they often pick up vehicles not seen in the ordinary wing mirror. However, in altering the angle, they alter the perspective. Two reflections of the same vehicle will show different sizes different distances away. Which is correct? Perhaps you will work it out before you crash?

You could try a rear view camera. The trouble is that gives you another thing to look at inside the car instead of looking at the road and again may cause more danger than it averts.

What Types Of Towing Mirrors Are Available?

When you are towing behind your car, you cannot rely on the usual side mirrors to give you the best view. The length and possibly the width of your combined vehicle will be much greater than before and you need towing mirrors to help.

The basic idea is to give you a wider and deeper view of the road, in particular the area to the rear quarter. So, the simplest sort of towing mirror is just a clip-on second mirror. Attached with simple clips, this second mirror gives a second view, further out from the first. This effectively widens the vehicle and your view down the side of it.

Another version helps reduce the distraction of having two mirrors each side, by having the second mounted on a bracket which is stuck on to the first with a vacuum sticker. This means you cannot look in the normal mirror by mistake and the second, wide mirror is your only choice.

Some manufacturers recommend having a flat screen mirror to the off side and a convex mirror to the near side. This gives a widened view of the near side, which as a driver you are further away from. This means you are looking at 4 mirrors with 3 different perspectives!

Some makers offer a complete replacement mirror. This takes the place of the original wing mirror and has scissor-type expandable arms, so that either mechanically or sometimes electrically, the mirror can be pushed further and further away from the side of the car. This allows better adjustment to the width of the car or the load you are towing.

The fixings for towing mirrors are numerous. Some are specific to the car they go on and others claim to be universal fittings. Various different sizes of mirror are offered too.

Safer lane changing

Generally driving on the freeway is safer than on more minor roads. You keep in line and do not have to worry about people coming the other way. However, that all comes to end when you start changing lanes.

The big danger in changing lanes is moving into another vehicle. They would be in the lane already. Since they are behind you, they will not be visible. Your side mirrors may not pick them up as they are likely to be in the blind spots of your vehicle.

One step to take, if you are in this position often, is to get yourself some blind spot mirrors. These will fit to the existing mirrors or have their own extended brackets. They will give a wider view down the rear quarter of the car and eliminate some, but not all, of the blind spots.

Even then, you will still have blind spots to either side and these will be that much bigger if you are in a long vehicle. A car or even a truck could be lurking in the blind spot and you will not see it until you move into it.

Bear the blind spot in mind at all times. Give a good long indicator time. Let those around you, especially if they are hidden, get a clear idea of what you are going to do. You may find the guy to your rear quarter steps on the gas so you can see him, or drops off to give you room.

Move out in a slow, easy movement. Let those around you see what you are doing and be able to predict where you are going. They can allow you to fit in the new lane.

When you get there, try to keep out of everyone else’s blind spots!

Safe vacation with your motor home

You have your new motor home and want to get away on vacation. However, a motor home is not the same as a car and you need to plan before you set off. Safety is the issue!

  1. Make sure your moveable items big and small are secure. Anything that could move and break needs to be locked away. Larger items, such as chairs, should be tied down. They might not break if they moved, but they would destabilise the vehicle you are driving.
  2. Lock all doors and windows, both inside and out. You do not want them moving, slamming or breaking whilst you are driving. Exterior openings in particular must be secure. An opening door or sky-light could catch the wind and drag the vehicle dangerously.
  3. Check your flammable substances. Any heating oil or cooking gas should be secured most carefully and kept away from possible heat sources such as the engine or exhaust.
  4. All taps should be off and cables and hoses secure. You do not need a gas leak or water flood in the middle of your journey. A simple double-check could save a lot of danger and damage later.
  5. Roof storage. If you have this, ensure it will neither fall off nor catch the wind during travel.
  6. Check the brakes with a full load, before you have gone far, so you are comfortable with the response and confident of their efficiency.
  7. Check blind spots. Investigate the blind spots to your new long vehicle. Invest in some blind spot mirrors and practice using them. You will still have blind spots, so check where they are and how to reduce their effect by head movement. Adjust your mirrors to get the best coverage.
  8. Get a good map and off you go!
